The deadline for IPL franchises to finalize on their retentions is just around the corner, with November 15 being the date. Well, that means trade talks would be heating up too, and we should surely be bracing up for some major rejigs ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction. While the trade deal between CSK and RR for Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran in favour of Sanju Samson is the headline at the moment. Meanwhile, rumours are doing the rounds about deals that franchises wanted to make, fell flat and speculations about which stars that the teams wanted to release but were denied. Ahead of the retention deadline, let’s take a look at the IPL trade rules.

IPL trade rules explained

  1. Players who participate in the IPL 2026 auction may not be traded immediately after the event.
  2. A franchise has to obtain a No Objection Certificate from the respective board if the player is an overseas talent.
  3. Both the selling and buying franchise should adhere to the payable League fee.
  4. Franchises should ensure player is match fit at the time of trade. The player could undergo medical examination before the deal is finalized.
  5. There is no limit on the number of Players that a Franchisee may trade during any Trading Window.
  6. BCCI will be the first to communicate on any trade deals that take place before IPL 2026.
  7. A player can be traded only once for that particular season.
  8. IPL teams can send a list of players to the BCCI whom they wish to acquire from other teams. This will be termed Expression of Interest.
  9. The BCCI will then inform the franchises that they have received an EOI for their players.
  10. Each team has 48 hours to respond to the BCCI’s email and if not done by then, the EOI is considered rejected.
  11. A consent form is sent to a player after the BCCI receives an EOI from a franchise.
  12. Only when a player signs the form and the copy is sent to the BCCI can trade discussions take place.
  13. In the Consent Form, the Player will unconditionally agree to sign a new Player Contract with any other Franchisee for his original League Fee plus the agreed Player Percentage of any Negotiated Increase that may be agreed between any buying Franchisee and the selling Franchisee. The selling Franchisee will unconditionally agree to release the Player from his existing contract in return for the agreed Franchisee Percentage of the Negotiated Increase,” a Cricbuzz report states.
  14. If more than one franchise is interested in trade with a particular team, then the selling team has the right to negotiate with the respective parties. It is pertinent to point out that the team and not the player has the discretion to accept the bid.
  15. If the two teams agree a negotiated increase, it will be shared between the player and the selling franchisee as recorded in the consent form.
  16. The buying Franchisee will pay one time fee of the agreed Franchisee Percentage of the Negotiated Increase to the selling Franchisee,” as per Cricbuzz.
  17. Both teams must reach an agreement should they wish to decrease the league fee for a player.
  18. BCCI’s approval is required for any trades with a Negotiated Decrease.
  19. Should a player voluntarily agree for decrease in fee, then he should write to the BCCI in addition with the board deciding if the deal is appropriate and not forced.
  20. BCCI reserves the right to overturn the trade and/or impose a financial penalty on any of the parties if it discovers any unusual or inappropriate circumstances in relation to it.
